Volleyball Cruises to 3-0 Win Over UAPB
Sept. 20, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas - A balanced offensive attack and nine service aces allowed the TCU volleyball team to cruise to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-14) win over UAPB to open the second day of the TCU Molten Invitational inside the University Recreation Center.
Blaire Pickens led the Horned Frogs (9-4) with seven kills and zero errors for a match-high .667 clip. Lefty Stephanie Holland recorded six kills of her own, while outside hitters Ashley Smith and Macy Capen each put down five kills.
TCU hit .434 and held the Lady Lions (1-11) to a -.025 hitting percentage in the match. Alexia Heist and Trisha Langley paced the offense for the Frogs with 21 and 15 assists, respectively. Shane Peters was the defensive leader with 10 digs, while TCU finished with eight and a half team blocks.
A block from Smith and Mattie Burleson got TCU started off right, as Smith would head back to the service line and start a 6-0 run that included two service aces to get the Frogs up to a 7-0 lead to start the set. A kill from the Lady Lions broke up the run, but Burleson responded right back with a kill down the middle. TCU continued to spread out the offense and limited the Lady Lions to a -.174 clip in the set as they easily won 25-7.
UAPB would keep the second set pretty even to open the set, but an error by the Lady Lions along with an ace from Regan McGuire started a 4-0 TCU run that lifted the Frogs to an 11-7 lead. TCU committed two service errors, but two straight kills from Pickens lifted the Frogs to a 16-9 lead. UAPB would go on a 3-0 run of its own to close the gap within four at 16-12, but that was as close as they would get with Peters serving out the rest of the set for a 25-12 victory.
Natalie Gower checked into the match to start the third set and slammed down two kills and a service ace to get TCU started on an 8-2 run. The Frogs continued to roll and did not let the Lady Lion any closer than six, as Capen notched two kills to end the set 25-14 in favor of TCU.
The Frogs will wrap up the TCU Molten Invitational by taking on High Point in the championship match tonight at 7 p.m., at the Rec Center.
