Volleyball Takes Out Baylor
Oct. 16, 2013
WACO, Texas - Another dominant performance from Natalie Gower led the TCU volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) win over Baylor Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.
With the sweep over the Bears (9-12, 1-4 Big 12), the Horned Frogs (13-7, 2-4 Big 12) claimed their first win in program history in Waco and its first win over Baylor as Big 12 Conference members.
TCU took charge of the match from the start with a 3-0 run highlighted with a service ace from Alexia Heist. The Frogs continued to run up the score and forced Baylor into a timeout with TCU leading 10-6. Strong offense from the Frogs kept the lead intact, as two straight blocks from Gower and Ashley Smith pushed the lead to 16-9.
Baylor did not give up though and used a balanced offensive attack to put the set within one at 19-18. The teams battled for points until a kill from Smith gave TCU its first set point at 24-22. Baylor withheld the set one victory from TCU with a kill from Laura Jones, but the Frogs sealed the win the very next point.
The Frogs took the momentum into the second set and ran off with a 7-1 lead, with Gower leading the way with three kills and two service aces in the run. Baylor responded with a 3-0 run of its own, but TCU did not let the Bears back into the match as the Frogs continued to extend their lead in the set. Leading 19-15, Baylor would go on a 5-3 run to pull the match within two at 22-20, but kills from Smith and Blaire Pickens ended the set in TCU's favor at 25-21.
The third set was a fight for points at the start, as the teams continued to trade points all the way into the media timeout with TCU leading 15-12. After a service ace from Hope Ogden that put the match within one for the Bears, TCU used a kill from Mattie Burleson to spark a 4-0 run that was capped off with another kill from Gower. The Frogs never looked back and took the match in three with a 25-21 set three win.
Gower finished the match with a team-high 10 kills, a .400 hitting percentage, a career-high four service aces and five total blocks. Smith chipped in nine kills on the night, while Shane Peters had another double-digit dig night with 13.
TCU will have the weekend off and will see action again next Wednesday as the Frogs welcome Oklahoma to the University Recreation Center for a 6:30 p.m. match. The tilt with the Sooners will air live on FSSW+ in the DFW market, FS Oklahoma+ and FCS Central nationally.
