TCU Upended by Oklahoma
Oct. 23, 2013
FORT WORTH, Texas - In front of a sold-out crowd, the TCU volleyball team fell just short to Oklahoma 3-2 (16-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 9-15), in a five-set thriller at the University Recreation Center Wednesday night.
The Horned Frogs (13-8, 2-5 Big 12) and the Sooners (17-4, 5-2 Big 12) battled for four straight sets, but TCU ran out of steam in its second straight five-set match at home, as Oklahoma claimed the fifth set and the match.
The Sooners controlled the majority of the first behind the offensive power of Sallie McLaurin, who notched seven kills and zero errors in the set. With Oklahoma leading 15-12 at the media timeout, TCU closed the gap by capitalizing on the Sooners' errors, but a 5-0 run by Julia Doyle near the end of the set powered Oklahoma to a 25-16 set one victory.
TCU did not go down though and traded points with the Sooners deep into the second set with Oklahoma only leading by one at 15-14 when the media timeout was called. A block from Mattie Burleson and Yvonne Igodan tied the set up and a kill from Ashley Smith put the Frogs back into the lead. The Sooners tied the set up only once more, as TCU closed out the set on a 9-1 run, with a block from Smith and Natalie Gower sealing a 25-17 win.
Out of the break, the Frogs ran out to a 3-0 lead that was highlighted with two blocks by Gower and a service ace from Smith. TCU continued to extend its lead, but Oklahoma slowly chipped away at the gap and tied the set up at 10-10. The two teams fought for points with the score tying on nine occasions in the set but two unforced errors from TCU at 22-22 proved to be costly as a kill from McLaurin gave the Sooners the set three win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Two service aces from Alexia Heist started the Frogs out on the right foot to begin set four, as TCU shot out to a 6-1 lead. Oklahoma did not give up and stormed back to tie the set at 11-11 off a TCU error, but the Frogs did not let them get any closer. TCU used a balanced offensive attack and five service aces in the fourth set alone to tie the match up at 2-2 and go into the decisive fifth set for the third time this season in Big 12 play.
TCU could not carry the momentum into the fifth set, as Oklahoma recorded three straight blocks to start the set and capitalized off strong serving from Doyle to easily claim the set and the match.
The Frogs had three players record double-digit kills, with Smith leading the way with 17 kills, while Igodan and Gower recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Shane Peters had her highest dig total of her young career, by finishing with a match-high 27 digs, while Sutton Sunstrum added a season-high 18 digs. Heist finished with a double-double of 26 assists and 13 digs, while also chipping in three service aces.
McLaurin led the way for the Sooners with a match-high 23 kills and only one error for a .537 hitting clip, while Kierra Holst was the other offensive leader with 17 kills. Taylor Migliazzo led the defensive front for Oklahoma with 25 digs, while Doyle dished out 50 assists and 16 digs for a double-double of her own.
TCU will hit the road for its next match by traveling to Ames, Iowa for a 5 p.m. matchup with Iowa State on Saturday, Oct. 26.
