AUSTIN, Texas - The TCU volleyball team came up short Wednesday night to No. 1 Texas 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 15-25, 23-25) in Gregory Gym.

Playing the No. 1 team in the country for the first time in program history, the Horned Frogs (13-10, 2-7 Big 12) managed to take a set for the first time in program history from the Longhorns (16-2, 9-0 Big 12), but Texas ultimately came out on top and took the match in four sets.

The teams battled for points to start the match, with TCU taking an early 6-4 lead and forcing Texas to use its first timeout. The Frogs continued to lead until a kill and block from Khat Bell, along with a kill from Haley Eckerman gave the lead back to the Longhorns at 10-8. Texas dominated the rest of the set and held TCU to a .029 hitting percentage and only seven kills in route to a 25-20 set one win.

TCU started the second set strong and used a balanced offensive attack to take a 10-6 lead. Texas stormed back with a 5-0 run of their own to win the lead back, but the Frogs used a 6-2 run of their own with an ace from Natalie Gower forcing the Longhorns into their final timeout at 16-13. A fight for points ensued, before a kill from Yvonne set in motion a 4-0 run by TCU that included two straight aces from Sutton Sunstrum for a 21-17 Frogs lead. Texas was unable to close the gap as kill from Gower and Stephanie Holland ended the second set in TCU's favor, 25-20.

Out of the intermission, Texas controlled the set with strong serving runs that took TCU out of their offensive stride. Trailing 10-4, a block from Mattie Burleson and two kills put the match within three, but that was as close as the Frogs would get. Texas pulled out the victory in the third set, 25-15, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

TCU bounced back and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set with Holland recording two kills in the run. Texas came\ back to tie the match at 8-8 and then the teams began to trade points, with the score being tied on 10 occasions throughout the rest of the set. Tied 18-18, a kill from Eckerman and an ace from Sarah Palmer, put the Longhorns up by two, but an error by Texas and a block from Burleson and Pickens tied it back up at 21-21. The set would tie twice more before an error by the Frogs and a block from Molly McCage and Bailey Webster sealed the win for Texas at 25-23.

The Frogs had four players lead the team in kills, with Burleson, Pickens, Holland and Ashley Smith all recording eight kills. Alexia Heist notched a double-double with 18 assists and 12 digs, while Smith and Shane Peters finished with double-digit digs of 10 and 13, respectively.

After two straight road matches, TCU will head home to host Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Noon at the University Recreation Center.
