Nov. 29, 2014
EL PASO, Texas - The TCU volleyball team ended the 2014 season with a 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-20, 25-19) victory over UTEP on Saturday afternoon in El Paso at Memorial Gym.
Blaire Pickens, Regan McGuire and Ashley Smith were all just shy of the double-digit kill mark with nine in the match. Playing in her hometown, Alexia Heist finished with 28 assists, while also chipping in four digs.
Besides Sunstrum's career-high day in the backrow, Macy Capen also put up career-high numbers with 12 digs, while Ashley Smith passed the double-digit plateau for the 14th time this season with 11 digs.
TCU began the match with a battle for points until a kill from Pickens sparked a 5-0 run that included kills from Holland and a block from Gower and Smith. After a timeout by UTEP, the Miners were able to roll off three straight points. A service error by UTEP gave the momentum back to the Frogs, who then scored six straight points capped off by a service ace by Smith to take a 17-9 lead.
The Frogs would commit a hitting error, before TCU responded by taking five of the next six points to take a double-digit lead, 22-11. TCU did not falter the rest of the set, as Pickens connected with McGuire and Gower for two big blocks to take the first set 25-17.
The second set was a different story for TCU, as UTEP was able to put down 14 kills and zero errors for a .389 hitting clip, while holding the Frogs to a .095 hitting percentage. After a kill from McGuire along with an error by the Miners, UTEP was able to capitalize off a TCU error and go on a 10-1 run to take a 15-7 lead. The Miners never let up and stole the set from TCU, 25-16.
TCU came out of the break ready to go and jumped out to a 4-0 lead capped off by a kill from Gower. The Frogs continued to hold UTEP at a distance, until a 6-2 run brought the set even, 16-16.
Mia Swanegan went up for her first kill of the match to give the Frogs a 17-16 advantage. The Miners fought back to even out the set before kills from Smith and Gower propelled TCU on a 6-1 run to extend the lead back to 23-18. The Frogs finished off the set with kills from Smith and Pickens for a 25-20 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The teams traded points to begin the fourth set until two straight kills from Smith started a 4-0 TCU run that was capped off by another Smith kill for an 11-7 lead. The Frogs kept up the pressure and never lost the lead as Capen struck down two service aces in a row to make it a 19-14 lead for TCU.
UTEP attempted to close in on the lead, but were unsuccessful as Gower slammed down two kills from the middle to reach her season-high for a 25-19 victory.
With the victory over the Miners, TCU now concludes the 2014 season. TCU was able to post a 17-15 record overall for the 10th winning season under the tenure of head coach Prentice Lewis, while also going 6-10 in Big 12 action for a sixth place finish.
