Volleyball Releases Non-Conference Slate
May 23, 2013
FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU volleyball head coach Prentice Lewis announced Thursday the non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2013 campaign.
The Horned Frogs' non-conference slate includes two opponents who reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago, including USC who played in the NCAA Regional Final before falling to eventual NCAA Champion and conference foe Texas. The 15-match schedule, which also features dates against SEC standouts Georgia and Ole Miss, should provide a solid test for a young and talented TCU squad before it opens Big 12 play late September.
The Big 12 had three teams finish in the top 25 a year ago, including No. 1 Texas. It also sent five or more teams to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth-straight year, while six out of the nine league foes won 20 or more games.
TCU will open its regular-season Friday, Aug. 30 at the Georgia Tournament versus Furman. The Frogs will close the two-day tournament taking on host Georgia and Lipscomb the following day before heading to Illinois to battle Illinois-Chicago on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The Purple and White will then travel to Wisconsin to square off against Southern California (Sept. 6) and Marquette (Sept. 7), respectively. USC finished No. 6 in the final AVCA Coaches Poll in 2012 and closed the season 30-6 overall after finishing third in the Pac 12. The Golden Eagles rattled off a program-best 27-7 record a year ago, which included 13 conference victories en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance.
TCU will open its home schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 11 against North Texas. UNT went 26-12 in 2012 and is led by first-year head coach Andrew Palileo who has helped both South Dakota State and Washington State qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
On Sept. 13-14, the Frogs will host the annual TCU Tournament, which will feature matches against Stephen F. Austin, Houston, Grambling State and Ole Miss.
The Purple and White will close the tournament portion of its non-conference schedule in North Carolina against the likes of North Carolina Central (Sept. 20), George Mason (Sept. 21) and host UNC Greensboro (Sept. 21). The Frogs will conclude non-conference play at Prairie View A&M on Wednesday, Nov. 6, which is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. CT.
Fans will receive their first look at the 2013 Horned Frogs on Saturday, Aug. 17 with the annual Purple and White Scrimmage at 5:00 p.m. CT. A week later, TCU will host its alumni match at 11:00 a.m. CT in Fort Worth.
