Smith Selected to Preseason Team

Aug. 6, 2015

FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU volleyball junior Ashley Smith garnered Preseason All-Big 12 honors on Thursday afternoon, as announced by the conference office.

Smith, an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection in 2014, becomes the second player in program history selected to the preseason team and first since 2013. The preseason team is chosen by league coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

“It is always nice to see any member of our team be recognized by the coaches in the Big 12,” Director of Volleyball Jill Kramer said. “Ashley had a good season last year and has worked very hard this spring and summer. She has adapted very well within our team's culture and has developed into a great leader.

“Ashley also has a tremendous group of teammates around her who are all valued and will all contribute to our successes this season. We are looking forward to getting out on the court and competing at home come Aug. 28.”

The League City, Texas native has been an instrumental part of the TCU offense the last two seasons, as she led the team in kills in 2014 with 333 and finished second with 265 after her freshman campaign in 2013. Smith has been a consistent presence on the court, with the junior seeing time in 60 matches over the last two seasons and 215 sets.

A 6-foot-1 outside hitter, Smith also finished second on the team with 27 service aces a year ago and 277 digs. Smith notched double-digit kills on 16 occasions and finished with a team-leading 11 double-doubles on the season. Over the last two seasons, Smith has been named to five all-tournament teams, while also picking up MVP accolades at the 2014 TCU Molten Invitational.

TCU will open the season with the annual Purple & White Scrimmage on Aug. 22, before officially starting the season with Abilene Christian, Texas State and UTEP at home on Aug. 28-29 at the University Recreation Center.
