Volleyball Readies for Weekend Travel

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's volleyball team is set to take on three opponents this weekend, including the No. 3 team in the nation.

The Horned Frogs will first take on the University of Illinois-Chicago on Thursday night at 5 p.m., at the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill. The team will then travel to Milwaukee, Wis., where they will battle against No. 3 USC on Friday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m., and host Marquette on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Noon at the Al McGuire Center

TCU is coming off an opening weekend, where the Frogs posted a 2-1 record at the Georgia Bulldog Invitational. TCU swept Furman to open the season, before falling to host Georgia. The Frogs rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Lipscomb, as the team posted a record-breaking 21 blocks, with 12 of those coming from freshman Regan McGuire. Ashley Smith and Yvonne Igodan were named to the all-tournament team after posting 27 and 23 kills, respectively.

This will be the first time TCU has faced UIC in program history, while this is the second meeting with USC and the sixth with Marquette. USC won the only other competition between the teams last fall, while this will be the first time in nine years that TCU has faced the Golden Eagles.

 

Breaking Down the Opponent - UIC

-UIC has a 1-2 record after competing in the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy, where the Flames defeated Elon and fell to Navy and UNC Wilmington

-Junior Sara Sternard led the FLames with 38 kills and a .365 hitting percentage on her way to being named to the all-tournament team

-Over the three matches, MaryKate Imrie guided the offense with 133 assists in the three matches for 11.08 assists per set

-Series: This is the first meeting between the two teams.

 

Breaking Down the Opponent - USC

-USC comes into the matchup ranked No. 3 in the nation after winning the Mortar Board Premier Tournament at Purdue

-Samantha Brisco was named tournament MVP for the third time in her career, while Ebony Nwanebu and Natalie Hagguland were also members of the all-tourmanet team

-Nwanebu was recently anmed Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after averaging 3.75 kills, 1.12 blocks and 4.44 points per set in the team's three wins

-Series: This is the second meeting between the two teams. USC leads the series 1-0 after defeating the Frogs 3-0 (24-26, 22-25, 25-27) last fall.

 

Breaking Down the Opponent - Marquette

-The Golden Eagles are 1-1 after defeating Bowling Green and dropping a five-set match to No. 13 BYU last weekend at the Hampton Inn Invitational

-Autumn Bailey and Elizabeth Koberstein led Marquette in the tournament, as both players were named to the all-tournament team.

-Bailey recorded match-high kills of 19 and 26 in the two matches and was also honored as Big East Freshman of the Week

-Series: Marquette leads the series 4-1 and this will be the first time the two teams have met in nine years with the last matchup coming on Oct. 23, 2004. The Golden Eagles won 3-0 (24-30, 20-30, 22-30).
