Gower Earns Big 12 POW Honors

Oct. 3, 2016

FORT WORTH, Texas – After a school record-breaking performance this past weekend, Natalie Gower becomes the first TCU volleyball player to be named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

"It's really nice to see Natalie’s hard work pay off,” Director of Volleyball Jill Kramer said. “She's been spending a ton of time studying the game and developing her craft as a middle blocker. The improvement she has made alongside her teammates over the past couple of years is truly a testament to the daily effort they all put in. It's icing on the cake for them to be rewarded for it publicly."

Gower was a force at the net defensively for TCU as the senior recorded a conference-high 24 total blocks over the two matches played last week. In the match against Oklahoma, Gower finished with a single-match school record 15 total blocks including six in the fifth set alone to lead TCU to the 3-2 victory. The St. Louis, Mo., native was also a force offensively as she finished with 15 kills against the Sooners to record the first double-double in her career.

The 24 total blocks and 2.40 blocks per set led the conference during week six of action and Gower is now ranked second overall in all matches with 1.34 blocks per set this season. The 15 blocks recorded by Gower ties the Big 12 single-match record for five sets and is the most blocks recorded by a Big 12 player since 2006. The blocking total is also tied for the most blocks recorded by a player in the NCAA this season in a five-set match and is tied for the second-most by a player overall this season.

TCU also broke the single-match school record in total blocks against Oklahoma with 23.5 which were the most recorded by any Big 12 team this season.

The Horned Frogs return to action by going on the road for the next two matches as they travel to Waco, Texas to face Baylor on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m., on ESPNU, before traveling to Manhattan, Kan., to take on Kansas State on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
