Volleyball Welcomes Chinese Professional Team

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU volleyball team will take a break from Big 12 action and will host the Chinese professional volleyball team, Zhejiang, on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., for an exhibition match inside the University Recreation Center.

The Horned Frogs will be hosting their first international team in program history, while the match will be the third of six matches that Zhejiang will be playing while staying in the United States. Zhejiang has already played Texas Tech and NAIA school Wayland Baptist and will take on Texas twice and Long Beach State before flying back home.

Zhejiang plays in the highest level, Group A, of the Chinese Volleyball league, and is the defending national champion. The team also took third place in the 2012-13 season and is ranked in the top 3 of professional teams in China.

The Zhejiang squad, founded in 1958, has a storied history of success, including players who have gone on to win national championships and world championships. Zhejiang has won the Chinese National Championship five times, including last year, and has been honored twice by the provincial government for its exploits.

TCU has wrapped up the first half of Big 12 conference play and is coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Texas on Wednesday night in Austin. The Frogs are led by Ashley Smith and Stephanie Holland, who are averaging 2.88 and 2.71 kills per set, respectively.

Alexia Heist has been the center of the 5-1 offense TCU has had to run the past few weeks with injuries in place and has totaled 519 assists and 6.57 assists per set this season.

TCU continues to lead the Big 12 in service aces with 117 on the year, while also averaging 1.48 per set, which is ranked in the top 50 in the country. The Frogs are also hitting their mark this season and have a team hitting clip of .259, which checks in at No. 37 nationally.

The exhibition match kicks off the first of four straight home matches. TCU will resume Big 12 play by hosting West Virginia on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m., before welcoming Kansas (Nov. 1) and Oklahoma (Nov. 5) at 1 p.m., and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
