Volleyball Trio Named Academic All-Big 12

FORT WORTH, Texas - The trio of Macy Capen, Alexia Heist and Sutton Sunstrum were a part of the 60 student-athletes named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. All three Horned Frogs earned distinction as First Team honorees for the first time in their careers.
A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Capen has played in every match except for two for the Frogs and has recorded 90 kills and 96 digs on the season. The Speech-Language Pathology major has shattered her career-highs this season after notching 17 kills, 11 digs and three blocks against UNC Greensboro on Sept. 21 for her first double-double of her career. For her efforts, Capen was named to the Spartan Spiketacular All-Tournament team. The sophomore has finished with double-digit kills on two other occasions this season with 11 against Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 13 and 13 against West Virginia on Oct. 2.
Heist has been an integral part in running the TCU offense this fall and leads the team with 589 assists and 5.77 assists per set, which ranks No. 10 in the Big 12. The Business major has led the team in assists in 26 matches and has notched a team-leading seven double-doubles this season. In the five-set victory over Ole Miss, Heist finished with a career-high 32 assists and led the team to the title of the TCU Nike/Molten Invitational. The El Paso, Texas native is tied for second on the team with 23 service aces, while also recording 176 digs on the season.
A Mechanical Engineering major, Sunstrum has seen action in every set and match for TCU this fall and is second on the team with 231 digs and 2.29 digs per set. The Southlake, Texas native has recorded double-digit digs seven times this fall and led the team in digs on five occasions. Sunstrum has also spent time at the outside hitter position and led the team with 12 kills and a .429 hitting clip against Grambling State on Sept. 14, while also recording a career-high six service aces in the match. Sunstrum is tied for second on the team in service aces with 23 and has also recorded 29 assists and 30 total kills.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
