Women's XC Finishes Third at Texas Invite
Sept. 14, 2017
ROUND ROCK, Texas -- The TCU men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Round Rock, Texas, for the Texas Invitational on Thursday, where the women ran their second 4K race of the season and the men ran their first 6K.
TCU's top three women all placed top 10 individually, with Nicole Hicks finishing fifth, Evelyn Mandel sixth, and Lindsay Tomaini tenth. Hicks and Mandel stayed together throughout the race, but the senior crossed the finish line 1.42 seconds ahead of the freshman. Hicks finished in 14:28.17 and Mandel finished in 14:29.59.
"I think they raced strong," head coach Jennifer Fazioli said. "I think Evelyn needs to have a little more confidence in herself. Nicole has progressed every year and keeps getting better. I'm very happy with where the two of them are now."
Tomaini rounded out the top ten, finishing in 14:44.28.
"I thought Lindsay raced well," Fazioli said. "Her form is much improved. When she gets tired, we need to work on her knee lift and keeping her heels off the ground. If she can do that, she'll be right there with Nicole and Evelyn."
"I think we had some good stuff," Faziol said. "I'm really happy with where Dom is. I need her to keep racing the way she is. KJ is gaining confidence as she moves up and finished extremely strong. She will only get better once we get to 6K. I'm very happy with Elizabeth as well. Her form isn't breaking down and she's competing well."
The men's top two runners, similarly to the women's top two, finished less than two seconds apart. Senior Henry Butz was the first Horned Frog across the finish line for the second race in a row, but Dylan Brokmeyer was right on his heels. Butz finished the 6K in 20:36.32, with Brokmeyer finishing in 20:38.13.
"If I can get DB and Henry working together the entire way, I thinking feeding off energy from having a teammate with them can help them continue to make strides," Fazioli said. "I think if we can find a mix between the two, where Henry is more aggressive and DB is more conservative, they will be good."
Tonight's race gave the Horned Frogs a preview of one of the team's postseason meets. The race's venue, Old Settlers Park, is the site for the 2017 Big 12 Cross Country Championships, scheduled for Oct. 28.
The Horned Frogs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 23, where they will race at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.
