LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 12 TCU volleyball took care of business on the road, making quick work of Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon inside United Supermarkets Arena.
The Horned Frogs (13-3, 3-1 Big 12) hit over .300 as a team for the second straight match. It was the newly named AVCA Player of the Year Watch List duo of Evan Hendrix and Becca Kelley that powered the offense to victory, combining for 26 kills on a nearly .500 hitting efficiency. Kelley, who entered the contest with 394 career kills, tallied the 400th of her young career as the sophomore finished with 12 in the match.
It was all TCU from the start, as the Frogs stormed out to a 9-2 lead. Forced to call a timeout, Texas Tech was able to regroup a little, rattling off four straight points to cut the lead to five, but Hendrix and Kelley kept their foot on the gas. Rosemary Archer capped off the first set with an ace to hand TCU a 25-16 win.
The Red Raiders scored the first five points to start the second set, but the Frogs responded in a big way. After siding out, Kelley sparked a run of 10 straight TCU points to completely flip the momentum back. From there, the Frogs cruised the rest of the way, watching their lead grow to 10 after Mikala Young finished off the set 25-15 with back-to-back kills.
Ready to close out the match, TCU and Texas Tech traded points to start the third set. The Frogs finally found their separation with a 4-0 burst at 13-9, which featured three kills from Kelley. The Red Raiders managed to pull back within one point at 18-17, but TCU kept its composure and used a final 4-0 run to put the set and match away.
TCU is back in action on the road Thursday, Oct. 9, against UCF. First serve is set for 5 p.m. CT.
