Horned Frogs drop Big 12 opener
Josh Hoover was 20-32 for 242 yards, and the backfield pair of Trent Battle and Jeremy Payne each found the end zone. Defensively, Kaleb Elarms-Orr led the Horned Frogs with 13 tackles, a season high.
The Horned Frogs were able to take an early 14-0 lead thanks to strong efforts by Battle and Payne to reach across the goal line. Midway through the second quarter, TCU would extend its lead to three possessions thanks to a field goal by Nate McCashland.
Arizona State found a response for the first time of the night by way of a 57-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 10. The Sun Devils would continue to fight back, finding the end zone again to cut the lead to three heading into the locker room.
To begin the second half, the Horned Frogs drove the ball into the red zone before a bobbled pass landed in the hands of a Sun Devil defender. In the ensuing possession, ASU drove down the field before settling for a field goal to tie the game halfway through the third quarter.
It didn't take long for TCU to regain the lead, marching downfield in a drive that lasted just under three minutes to go in front 24-17. The Sun Devils would drive back down the field, but the Frogs defense stopped the home team at the goal line to preserve the lead.
Facing a fourth down at the goal line inside two minutes remaining, Arizona State found the end zone to even the score. On the ensuing TCU possession, the Sun Devils strip sacked Hoover to get the ball back in the red zone.
Arizona State would proceed to nail a 23-yard field goal to take the lead with just 1:14 left in the game and then earn an interception two plays later to seal the game.
