TCU grabs another in-state win in the final minutes
FORT WORTH – The No. 4 TCU women's soccer, behind a goal in the 86th minute by AJ Hennessey, defeated rival Texas A&M, 2-1, on Sunday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
The Horned Frogs (5-1) reversed last game's script and played much of the first half with precise possession and control of the ball and created numerous offensive chances in Texas A&M's half of the field. Seven Castain had a good offensive chance that was blocked in the 17th minute, but besides then TCU tallied three other shots in the first 45 minutes while only holding Texas A&M to two shots in the opening stanza.
To start the second half, the Frogs came out with the same intensity and control as they did in the first, as a goal was inching closer with each passing moment. In the 52nd minute, Castain passed a ball down the field to Emma Yolinsky who fed Sydney Becerra close to the box. Becerra was able to display a quick half-turn dribble move and put a beautiful shot that was able to sneak into the right part of the goal and put the Frogs up 1-0 early in the second half.
However, Texas A&M would answer, scoring a goal in the 58th minute to level the game at 1-1. TCU did not seize its offensive intensity and put three shots on goal throughout the following minutes but could not break through and erase the leveled score.
In the 86th minute, Becerra attracted attention from Texas A&M defenders in the middle of the field and dished the ball to Emma Yolinsky on the left side. Yolinsky would shoot on the spot, putting a ball on goal that was saved by the Aggie goalkeeper. The saved bounced right to AJ Hennessey who headed the ball into the back of the net to give TCU the late advantage and the eventual victory.
Olivia Geller played all 90 minutes in goal, posting a save.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
Overall thoughts on the game…
"Great plays with a response from last week. We talked about it and tried to get back to our roots and playing a quality brand of TCU soccer. I thought we did that. It was a good result and a timely goal. I thought we dominated the game from time of possession in the first half really well and for bits and pieces in the second half. I think that fatigued them (Texas A&M) and allowed for us to be more successful."
GAME NOTABLES
TCU will play its third straight home match on Friday, Sept. 12 against Gonzaga at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. That contest will take place at 7 p.m. and be televised on ESPN+.
