FORT WORTH – No. 2 TCU rode its nucleus of young talent past Abilene Christian and into the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs blanked the Wildcats 4-0 on an evening all-but-one player in their lineup were underclassmen.
TCU (23-3) played without All-Americans Pedro Vives and Lui Maxted as well as fellow NCAA Individual Championships qualifier Duncan Chan.
The Frogs sewed up the doubles point with victories on the top courts. Jack Pinnington, Albert Pedrico and Roger Pascual pocketed singles sweeps on courts one, three and four. TCU did not drop a set in singles play vs. the Western Athletic Conference champion Wildcats (13-11).
TCU now faces No. 24 Oklahoma at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the round of 32. The Sooners swept No. 33 Illinois in part one of Friday's doubleheader. The match was moved indoors due to thunderstorms.
"First of all, I want to say congratulations to ACU," said head coach David Roditi. "They won their conference – it's a good conference with Grand Canyon, UTA – they did a great job. Coach Juan Nunez has done a great job there. It was awesome to play him. They're always ready to play. The doubles point was as close as it could get. We were able to squeak it out, and then our guys won a bunch of first sets. Proud of our guys. All business. Tomorrow, 4 o'clock against a really tough OU team. They were top-10 for most of the year and it's going to be an absolute battle. Please come out. Go Frogs."
The Horned Frogs won their 10th consecutive opening round NCAA Tournament match and improved their home postseason record to 27-1. TCU is now 57-33 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. Friday's victory also boosted Roditi's career NCAA Tournament record to 31-9.
TCU will carry a 33-match home winning streak into Saturday's tilt. The Frogs have claimed 13 of their last 14 duals vs. Oklahoma.
Doubles Rundown
The player absences dramatically altered the composition of TCU's doubles lineup.
Pinnington and Woestendick, tabbed 32nd in the latest ITA rankings, manned the top spot for the seventh time in the Horned Frogs' last eight matches. The remaining courts, though, featured brand new pairs, with Pedrico and Julian Alonso teaming up on two and Pascual partnering with Filip Apltauer at the bottom.
ACU scored its lone set victory on court three, with Matheus Lima and Benjamin McDonald downing Apltauer and Pascual 6-3.
Yet TCU controlled the doubles point from start to finish despite the loss. The Horned Frogs broke early on courts one and two and built 4-2 leads in both matches.
Alonso and Pedrico were the first to finish, as they eased to a 6-3 takedown of Ethan Scribner and Alejandro Verdasco.
Pinnington and Woestendick clinched the doubles point moments after the Frogs' loss on court three. They got the better of ACU's top pair, Daniel Morozov and Merse Deli, 6-4. Pinnington and Woestendick did not surrender a service game.
The duo extended their winning streak to eight matches and has yet to lose on the outdoor courts. They improved to 12-4 as a pair.
For Alonso, Friday's win with his countryman Pedrico was only his second career dual doubles victory. Pedrico has now won with three different partners.
TCU claimed its eighth straight doubles point and boosted its season record to 22-4. The Horned Frogs are unbeaten (13-0) in doubles action on the purple courts.
