FORT WORTH – Evan Hendrix filled up the stat sheet on Friday night, finishing with 27 kills and 23 digs for her ninth straight double-double in No. 11 TCU's 3-1 victory over Kansas State.
Hendrix joins Jalyn Gibson (21 kills & 23 digs against No. 18 Minnesota on Sept. 7, 2024) and Melanie Parra (22 kills & 21 digs at Kansas State on Sept. 22, 2023) as the only players in program history since 2000 to record 20 kills and 20 digs in the same match.
The Horned Frogs (16-3, 6-1 Big 12) secured their 10th victory in Schollmaier Arena of the season and extended their home winning streak to 18 matches, dating back to last season, the longest active streak in the Big 12. At 16-3 overall, it marks their best record through 19 matches since 2011 (also 16-3).
Becca Kelley and Sarah Sylvester also had strong offensive nights. Kelley tallied 13 kills, and Sylvester followed with a career-high 12 kills on a .440 clip. Setter Ella Foti played a big part in the Frogs' success. The senior recorded a double-double that featured a career-best 21 digs.
Neither team managed to pull away early in the first set, setting the tone for a closely matched night. Deadlocked at 21 late in the set, Kansas State tried to pull away, but TCU quickly answered to even things at 23-23. The Wildcats did earn set point, but Hendrix and the home crowd were too much as the Frogs took the opening set, 26-24.
A fiery kill by Kelley set the tone for the second set, putting the Frogs on the board first. Soon after, Hendrix ignited a four-point run with a kill, helping TCU build an 8-2 lead. The Wildcats responded with a surge of their own, steadily closing the gap and tying the score at 14-14. Both teams continued to trade points down the stretch. Locked at 23 apiece, back-to-back kills from Von Groningen and Kelley sealed the set at 25-23, putting the Frogs up 2-0.
With every intention of closing out the match in three sets, Hendrix fueled a 7-2 run out of the gate. But once again, the Wildcats clawed back, turning the third set into another hard-fought battle. Kansas State tied the match at eight, and from there, the two teams exchanged points, neither side able to gain an edge until six straight points for the Wildcats gave them set point. With Kelley at the service line, the Frogs answered with a five-point run of their own, flipping set point on Kansas State. Fighting into extra points, the set featured a combined 13 set points before the Wildcats were able to steal the third 34-32 in the 11th-highest scoring set in the country this season.
Despite having a set under its belt, TCU retook all the momentum back in the fourth set. After swapping points in the opening stretch, Kelley sparked a 9-1 run, building a 20-14 lead for the Frogs. In cruise control, Hendrix closed out the set with a final kill, her 27th of the night, giving the TCU a 25-18 set win and the match victory, 3-1.
No. 11 TCU hits the road for a stretch of three consecutive ranked Big 12 matchups beginning with No. 15 Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
