ORLANDO, Fla. – A 22-kill night from sophomore outside hitter Evan Hendrix lifted No. 11 TCU to a 3-1 victory over UCF on Thursday night.
The Horned Frogs (14-3, 4-1 Big 12) took care of business on the road to secure their fourth win in conference play this season.
Hendrix led the offense with 22 kills, her third 20-plus kill contest in her last four matches. She also added 13 digs for her seventh straight double-double. Teammate Becca Kelley finished just one kill shy of 20, racking up 19 on a .289 clip.
TCU's defense traveled, totaling 13.0 blocks as a team. Senior middle blocker Sarah Sylvester tallied seven, followed by Alexis Roberson with five. Alice Volpe and Ella Foti each registered 15 digs, and Jaylen Clark, who earned the start, finished with a career-best eight digs.
An early 5-0 UCF run forces head coach Jason Williams to call his first timeout, trailing 7-4 in the opening set. The Frogs responded well out of the break, going on a 9-2 run that featured three kills and an ace from Emily Van Groningen, who earned the start. TCU carried the lead the remainder of the set behind a balanced offensive attack that hit .361 en route to a 25-20 set victory.
In the second, the Knights used a big 10-1 run to double up the Frogs at 14-7. Down but never out of things, three straight blocks by Kelley and Sylvester sparked a 5-0 stretch to pull TCU within two. Hendrix tied the set up at 19, but UCF pressed on to earn set point at 24-22. With their backs against the wall, the Frogs dug deep to fend off three set points and ultimately steal the second in extra points 27-25.
It was another back-and-forth battle in the third that featured seven ties and 13 lead changes between TCU and UCF. The Frogs had a chance to finish off the Knights with a sweep, but UCF's Avah Armour, who finished with 18 kills, helped her team stay alive and extend the match, winning 29-27.
Looking to finish things off, Hendrix notched her 21st kill of the match to kickstart a 4-0 run and give TCU a 23-20 lead late. The Knights managed to get within one, but Kelley and Hendrix slammed the door closed to give the Frogs the road win.
No. 11 TCU is back in action at home on Wednesday, Oct. 15, against Cincinnati.
